Michael Olise has concluded the 2026 World Cup with a historic individual milestone, though the sentiment remains bittersweet following Les Bleus' fourth-place finish. Entering the tournament as favorites, the French side saw their campaign end in disappointment following crucial defeats to Spain and England.
The 24-year-old Bayern Munich winger stood out on the global stage, providing seven assists—the highest tally ever recorded in a single edition of the World Cup. Despite this personal achievement, Olise admitted that the milestone did little to alleviate the pain of failing to win the trophy.
Not being able to take the trophy home is a huge disappointment. This is not how we had imagined the end of this World Cup at the beginning of the tournament. Michael Olise
In his reflection, Olise also paid tribute to outgoing national coach Didier Deschamps for the faith shown in him throughout the tournament. He reaffirmed his commitment to the national team, expressing hope that they can create more joyous memories for the fans in the future.
Olise is now set for an extended summer break before returning to his club. Manager Vincent Kompany is expected to lean heavily on the playmaker as a cornerstone of Bayern's attack as they prepare for the upcoming domestic season.
