Deco explains why Barcelona chose Gordon over Rashford

Barcelona sporting director Deco has opened up about the club's decision not to trigger the option to sign Marcus Rashford permanently following his loan spell from Manchester United. Despite the forward contributing 14 goals and helping the team secure both the La Liga title and the Spanish Supercup, the club decided to pivot in a different direction.

Instead of retaining Rashford, the Blaugrana completed a 70 million euro deal for Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon. Deco explained that the decision was driven by a need for a specific tactical profile required by head coach Hansi Flick.

"We are extremely grateful to Rashford. He contributed a lot last season, but our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony. His style fits with what the coach is looking for." Deco

Deco noted that the team had struggled with energy levels and lacked intensity, issues they aimed to resolve with the arrival of Gordon. The winger has already made an immediate impact, providing five assists in his first five appearances. This tactical shift was part of a larger recruitment drive that also included signings like Rodri and Joao Cancelo.

Regarding the failed pursuit of Bernardo Silva, who eventually joined Real Madrid, Deco clarified that the breakdown in talks was due to more than just finances. The club had concerns regarding playing time guarantees, which remain firmly under the coach's jurisdiction, rather than the player's specific demands.
