Atletico Madrid are closing in on their primary midfield target as they look to reinforce the squad for the upcoming campaign. According to recent reports, the club has reached a full agreement with Sporting CP's Morten Hjulmand, with negotiations now shifting to finalising the transfer fee.
This move comes as a direct result of the club distancing themselves from Joao Gomes. The relationship between Atletico and super-agent Jorge Mendes soured significantly during separate negotiations for Bernardo Silva, where Mendes allegedly halted talks to entertain interest from Real Madrid. This fallout has pushed the Spanish giants to pivot toward the Danish midfielder who has excelled in the Primeira Liga.
While the player is eager to move to La Liga, both clubs must still agree on the final financial package. The deal is expected to fall within the €35 million to €40 million range. Reports indicate that the 27-year-old captain has already bid farewell to his teammates and coaching staff in Lisbon.

AC Milan are also reportedly monitoring the situation, as Ruben Amorim is keen on a reunion with his former player. Despite the competition, Atletico remains in the driving seat as they seek a commanding presence to anchor their midfield under Diego Simeone.
The club is also actively scouting for defensive reinforcements, with Tottenham’s Cristian Romero being linked to the team. Additionally, they are monitoring PSG's Kang-in Lee. With Koke recently signing an extension until 2027, the addition of Hjulmand is viewed as a vital step in modernising a midfield that lacked consistency last season.
