South Africa midfielder Themba Zwane has been handed a three-match suspension by FIFA following his controversial red card during the opening 2026 World Cup defeat to Mexico. The severe ruling rules the 36-year-old veteran out for the remainder of the group stage, dealing a significant blow to head coach Hugo Broos and his squad.

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee decided to extend the initial automatic one-match ban to three games, citing the incident as serious foul play. The dismissal occurred in the 84th minute after a VAR review, which deemed that Zwane had illegally raised his arm against Mexico's Roberto Alvarado. While the suspension remains subject to a potential appeal, the player is currently unavailable for the upcoming fixtures.

Hugo Broos expressed clear frustration regarding the decision, questioning the severity of the referee's call:

The second red card, we can discuss. It was the Mexican player who was blocking my player. It's the position of the referee, and we have to accept it also, but I don't think it was a red, it was too soft to give that as a red card. Hugo Broos

The loss of an experienced playmaker creates a void in the attacking setup for the national team. With their opening match result already a setback, South Africa faces a must-win situation in their next Group A game against Czechia in Atlanta on Thursday. The team will also be without Sphephelo Sithole, who was sent off earlier in the tournament, further depleting the squad depth.
