Forward Temwa Chawinga has committed her future to the KC Current by signing a contract extension that runs through 2029, the club announced on Monday.
Chawinga has established herself as the most prolific goal-scorer in the NWSL over the past two seasons. Since arriving in 2024, she has been a dominant force, recording 42 goals and 11 assists across 56 appearances, with 47 goals in total when accounting for postseason play.
This extension marks the first time the KC Current have utilized the league's new High Impact Player (HIP) rule, which officially takes effect on July 1. The rule allows clubs to exceed the established salary cap by up to $1,000,000 for players who meet specific criteria, providing a pathway to retain top-tier talent.
«This contract extension means a lot to me because I call Kansas City home. The way the club and the city supports me and my teammates is truly special. I'm looking forward to staying longer in Kansas City and working hard with my teammates,» said Chawinga.
The announcement follows a period of roster adjustments for the Current, including the recent trade of forward Ally Sentnor to Angel City FC. Chawinga remains the focal point of the team's attack as they continue their pursuit of silverware.
Chawinga and the Current are scheduled to return to competitive action this Friday, June 26, when they face Gotham FC in the NWSL Challenge Cup.
