Chelsea suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat away to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The decisive moment came in the 36th minute when Enzo le Fee converted a penalty, awarded after Levi Colwill brought down Brian Brobbey inside the area.
Manager Xabi Alonso continues to face scrutiny as he experiments with his starting XI. For the second consecutive match, the team lined up without a recognised striker, with Pedro Neto struggling to lead the line. Alonso's tactical tinkering, which included a three-man midfield, failed to yield a breakthrough as the team struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Following the match, Alonso expressed frustration with his team's defensive errors, specifically regarding the penalty incident, but refrained from criticising the officials. The Spaniard emphasised that the goal conceded was avoidable and pointed to a failure to execute the planned gameplan.
Chelsea's season has been plagued by injury setbacks, with key players like Joao Pedro, Emiliano Martinez, and Maxence Lacroix currently unavailable. These absences have forced Alonso to frequently adjust his personnel, hindering the establishment of a settled identity.
While the club sits fifth in the table and is currently on track for Champions League qualification, the lack of consistency remains a major concern. With the November international break approaching, Alonso faces a critical period to refine his system and find the stability needed to improve performance.
