The future of Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United remains a central topic at Old Trafford. While the club is working hard to secure a new deal for their talismanic leader, discussions have turned to who might eventually inherit the captain's armband.
Former Red Devils winger Lee Sharpe, speaking in association with NetBet, has offered his perspective on the leadership succession. In a somewhat surprising inclusion, Sharpe highlighted Mason Mount as a candidate, citing his experience at the highest level despite his struggles since arriving in Manchester.
I think if he can stay fit and play the way he has done previous seasons, Mason Mount, with his experience, would always be in with a shout. I think he would not necessarily rule by fear, but rule by example. Lee Sharpe
Sharpe also identified other candidates within the current squad, noting that Harry Maguire has proven capable in the role previously, and pointing to Lisandro Martinez as a defender who possesses the necessary "captain material" to lead the team.
Manchester United are reportedly eager to extend Fernandes' stay, as his current terms have only one year remaining with an option for an additional 12 months. Former striker Michael Owen has recently urged the club to do whatever it takes to keep the Portuguese star, describing him as too important to the team's progression to risk losing.
