Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has doubled down on his criticism of Jurgen Klopp, expressing disappointment over the former Liverpool coach's public remarks regarding Julian Nagelsmann’s tactical decisions ahead of the World Cup opener against Curacao.
The controversy began when Klopp, appearing as a pundit, remarked: "Luckily, Julian Nagelsmann is still picking the team." The use of the word "still" was widely perceived as unprofessional pressure, given the persistent speculation linking Klopp to the national team job.
Klopp apologised to Nagelsmann on Sunday after the game and said even at 59, I'm still stupid. That's typical Jurgen, that he throws out such phrases because he sees that he made a mistake. He apologised; that was the minimum. But something like that shouldn't have happened to him in the first place; it was very unthinking. Lothar Matthaus
Despite Klopp’s subsequent live-on-air apology, Matthaus remains unmoved. The former captain noted that a professional of Klopp's experience should understand the impact of external comments, particularly when they influence public perception of the head coach. Klopp and Thomas Muller had also previously suggested that Deniz Undav should start over Jamal Musiala, a move Matthaus branded as an unnecessary intervention.
With Germany now shifting focus to their next challenge against Ivory Coast, Matthaus warned that the team must prepare for a much sterner test. He emphasized the need for tactical flexibility and internal unity, urging figures around the team to focus on support rather than public criticism as the tournament progresses.
