Following a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their 2026 World Cup opener, the role of Cristiano Ronaldo in the Portugal squad has come under intense scrutiny. Former Ghana international Kevin-Prince Boateng has suggested that the legendary forward may need to sacrifice his starting spot for the good of the team.

Boateng, who played for clubs like AC Milan and Barcelona, argued that the 41-year-old’s presence creates an unhealthy tactical gravity, where teammates feel compelled to pass to him at every turn.

If Portugal wants to have a chance to go far, I believe Ronaldo should step aside. Let the others play and come on in the last 15-20 minutes to get that big result from his game. Kevin-Prince Boateng

During the match against DR Congo, Ronaldo became the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup game. However, he struggled to make an impact, registering only 25 touches and failing to record a shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.

Despite the criticism, Portugal manager Roberto Martinez has defended his talisman. The veteran forward is expected to retain his place in the starting XI for Portugal's second group match against Uzbekistan.
