Speculation about the star's future intensified following the 2026 World Cup held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament marked Ronaldo's sixth World Cup appearance—a record-breaking feat of longevity—though Portugal's run ended in the Round of 16 following a defeat to Spain.
Ronaldo had previously confirmed that the World Cup was his final appearance on the international stage. Despite his age, he remains under contract with the Saudi club Al-Nassr and has recently returned to training.
