Inter vs Lazio Supercoppa: USA option cools, San Siro emerges as favorite

The 2026 Italian Supercoppa will not take place in Saudi Arabia and will abandon the four-team format. Under existing agreements, Serie A retained the option to skip two of the five editions in the Middle East, leading the League Council to revert to a classic single-match final for the upcoming event.

While options in Morocco and the United States were explored, the logistics of organizing a match abroad at short notice have become increasingly challenging. According to league regulations, if a foreign venue cannot be secured, the match is traditionally held at the home stadium of the previous season's Serie A champion. Since Inter Milan claimed the title and also won the Coppa Italia, their opponents for the trophy will be cup finalists Lazio. Consequently, the Giuseppe Meazza at San Siro is emerging as the most realistic location for the 2026 clash.

The clubs are also bracing for lower earnings compared to previous editions. The Saudi-hosted tournaments previously offered a substantial 21 million euro prize pool, which will not be matched under the current arrangement as the league continues to weigh its options for international venues.
