Legendary Sheffield United and Doncaster Rovers striker Billy Sharp has made a surprise return to professional football. The 40-year-old, who announced his retirement just last month, has signed for Northern Premier League side AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

The return comes following the suspension of Diamonds midfielder James Clifton. Sharp, who previously had a loan spell at the club in 2005 where he scored nine goals in 16 appearances, has been drafted in to bolster the squad ahead of a crucial fixture.

The upcoming match against Burton Albion marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time AFC Rushden & Diamonds have reached the first round proper of the FA Cup. Should he feature, it will be the 814th professional appearance of Sharp's career.

Sharp brings a wealth of experience, having scored over 290 senior goals. Last season, he played 45 times for Doncaster Rovers across all competitions, netting 14 goals. The team travels to face the Brewers this Saturday at 15:00 GMT.
