A friendly match between Portuguese side Benfica and Brazil's Flamengo at the Algarve Stadium in Faro was marked by a tense atmosphere. The spotlight was on Benfica's Argentine midfielder Gianluca Prestianni, who faced a hostile reception from the traveling Brazilian supporters.
The animosity stems from a controversial incident during last season's Champions League, where Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior accused Prestianni of making racist insults while covering his mouth. That event led FIFA and IFAB to introduce the so-called "Prestianni Law," prohibiting players from covering their mouths during on-field arguments.
Prestianni entered the pitch as a substitute in the 57th minute, but was immediately met with pressure from both the stands and the opposition players, who targeted him with heavy tackles. Notably, a hard challenge by Emerson Royal drew significant attention during the match.
The entrance of Prestianni increased the emotional tension due to what happened in the recent past. I told the players to play our football. We don't support what happened, but we were here to play our match against Benfica. We won on merit. Leonardo Jardim
Flamengo manager Leonardo Jardim stated after the game that his players' actions were purely football-related and intended no harm, despite the obvious emotional weight surrounding the match.
