Club América nears deal for Tijuana midfielder Iván Tona

Club América is close to finalizing the transfer of midfielder Iván Tona. Pending an official announcement, the Tijuana defensive midfielder is set to become the fifth reinforcement brought in by manager Guillermo Almada.

Tona is a defensive midfielder defined by his ball recovery skills and his ability to provide clarity in transition. He possesses the confidence to drive forward with the ball and elude opponents, while also showing a knack for setting up teammates. His talent has grown significantly since 2023, as he established himself as a key figure for Tijuana.

The player's journey began in the Tijuana youth system, though he started his professional career with Dorados de Sinaloa in the Liga de Expansión. He later played for Cimarrones de Sonora and Raya2 before earning a move to Monterrey. Following his time in the north, he joined Tijuana, where his development accelerated.

América aims to integrate Tona alongside their existing new signings for the Apertura 2026 season: Óscar Perea, Miguel Ángel Borja, Edwin Cerrillo, and Carlos Álvarez.

The club is also actively searching for a center-back following the departure of Sebastián Cáceres. Manager Guillermo Almada has confirmed that finding a high-level replacement remains a priority. The front office faces a race against time, as the registration window closes on September 11.
