The debate over whether global superstars receive preferential treatment from referees is a staple of football discourse. While many fans suspect bias, the reality is more nuanced: elite players receive such intense scrutiny that it becomes nearly impossible for them to receive a completely neutral trial in the eyes of the public.
A recent incident involving Lionel Messi during a World Cup match against Algeria, where he caught defender Aissa Mandi in a reckless challenge, reignited this conversation. Referee Szymon Marciniak opted against a dismissal, as there was no clear intent or excessive intensity in the action. Furthermore, the lack of an immediate reaction from the Algerian players is a factor that officials consider when utilizing VAR.
For a straight red card to be shown, there must be clear evidence of endangering an opponent or using excessive force. In real-time, the contact appeared incidental rather than deliberate. While slow-motion replays can make any challenge look more severe, referees are trained to assess the nature of the challenge in its full context before intervening.
Referees are human, and the scrutiny following a high-profile decision—especially one involving a legend—can be overwhelming. The best officials aim to be strictly impartial, judging each incident on its own merits. However, the pressure of a potential incorrect red card against a player of Messi’s stature is a burden that few can completely ignore, regardless of their professionalism.
