Brazil president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has made light of Neymar's fitness issues at the 2026 World Cup, jokingly referring to the forward as the world's first "home office" player. During an event in Belo Horizonte, the president referenced a viral social media joke regarding the 34-year-old's absence from the pitch while he recovers from a calf injury.
Neymar has been sidelined for the opening stages of the tournament in North America, working away from the main squad to overcome a grade two calf strain. His absence has prompted frustration and humor back home, which the president echoed during his speech.
I saw something yesterday, that Neymar is the first home office call-up in the world. Home office player. I saw that on the internet yesterday. I think any day now we're going to have to make a national team with artificial intelligence: 11 Peles. Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva
This is not the first time the president has publicly commented on the physical condition of a Selecao star, famously questioning Ronaldo Nazario's fitness during the 2006 World Cup. Despite the light-hearted jabs, the Brazil medical staff are working on a strict schedule to ensure the forward is ready for the latter stages of the tournament.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti provided a positive update following the team's 3-0 win against Haiti. The coach confirmed that the veteran forward is set to rejoin tactical sessions with his teammates this coming Monday, making him available for the upcoming clash against Scotland.
