In 1966, the football paths of Peru and Brazil converged through Alberto Gallardo. Known in his home country as 'Jet' for his explosive speed, he became the first Peruvian player to perform in Brazilian professional football, joining Palmeiras.
Gallardo arrived in Brazil already seasoned by his experience in Europe with AC Milan and Cagliari. His transfer to Palmeiras was a recognition of the sophistication of Peruvian football at the time. As part of a squad famously known as the 'First Academy', Gallardo quickly became a key figure, providing the attack with necessary precision and pace.
During his time with Palmeiras, the Peruvian scored 22 goals in 46 official matches. He played a vital role in the club’s victory in the 1966 Campeonato Paulista and the 1967 Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa, which is considered the precursor to the modern Brazilian Championship.
His success laid the foundation for future generations of Peruvian players who would eventually find success in Brazil. Palmeiras historians still refer to him as the 'eternal Peruvian', emphasizing that he was the first to prove that players from Peru could successfully compete at the highest level of Brazilian football.
