Mexico backs Gianni Infantino despite Concacaf opposition

The Mexican Football Federation has officially broken ranks with its regional governing body, Concacaf, to express support for embattled FIFA president Gianni Infantino. This move follows calls from Concacaf for a comprehensive reckoning of Infantino's presidency after he abandoned plans to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors.

In an official statement, the Mexican FA emphasized its support for Infantino's leadership, specifically regarding the institutional strengthening of football. The federation noted that it would reject any attempts to remove the president outside of the established institutional framework, aligning its stance with that of Conmebol, the South American governing body.

This support stands in stark contrast to the position held by UEFA and various European football associations, which have explicitly lost confidence in Infantino. Despite the FIFA president withdrawing the proposed Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan, European governing bodies remain critical, demanding concrete assurances that such unilateral governance models will not be attempted again.

While Concacaf has previously described the proposal as a symptom of poor leadership, it has not officially withdrawn confidence in the president, unlike several European nations. The divide within the global football community continues to widen as associations weigh in on the future of the FIFA presidency.
