Arsenal are facing a nervous wait over the fitness of William Saliba after the defender was forced off during France’s World Cup semi-final clash against Spain. The centre-back collapsed on the pitch while in possession and had to be replaced after complaining of severe back pain.
The incident has intensified concerns regarding his long-term fitness. Reports have previously suggested that the defender might require surgery to resolve the persistent issue that has troubled him for several months.
Speaking on his condition, Saliba admitted earlier in the tournament that he had been playing through discomfort to remain available for critical fixtures in the Champions League and Premier League. Despite reassurances from manager Didier Deschamps prior to the tournament, the physical demands of the competition appear to have exacerbated the injury.
The club will conduct comprehensive medical assessments once Saliba returns to London. Should the need for surgery be confirmed, Arsenal could face a defensive crisis, with the player almost certainly ruled out of the Community Shield on August 16 and potentially missing the start of the domestic campaign.
