Arteta calls for Arsenal signings despite Community Shield success
Mikel Arteta urges Arsenal to sign defensive reinforcements following injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, despite a 3-0 Community Shield win.

Following a dominant 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has issued an urgent plea for further squad depth. While goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz, and Martin Odegaard secured the trophy, Arteta used his post-match briefing to address significant gaps in his defensive lineup.
"We know there are certain areas that through injuries we are weaker and we need to strengthen," Arteta stated. "We’re trying to do that and we’ve been trying to do that for weeks. Only when the opportunity is right for the club will we do it."
The club's primary concern remains the heart of the defense. William Saliba faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury during the World Cup, while Jurrien Timber is still managing a groin issue. Arteta confirmed that while Timber is showing a good trajectory, he remains weeks away from full fitness, and Saliba’s long-term recovery will require a cautious approach.
Arsenal has already identified potential targets, including Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa and former Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah, to bolster their ranks. However, negotiations with Villa are currently stalled over a valuation gap. Despite the impressive result against Enzo Maresca’s new-look City side, Arteta remains focused on ensuring the club makes strategic rather than reactive additions as the new season looms.
