Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has dismissed the idea that Sunday's Community Shield clash against Manchester City is merely a "glorified friendly." As the Gunners prepare for the fixture at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, the Swedish international insists that the squad's competitive fire remains intense.
Against City? As a friendly? I don't know what other people think but we want to win that game of course, for sure. Viktor Gyokeres
Gyokeres believes that securing an early trophy is vital for building momentum and confidence heading into the new season. He emphasized that the team’s goal is to ensure they are ready to defend their Premier League title, noting that the desire within Mikel Arteta’s camp is higher than ever.
The match comes as Arsenal celebrate the arrival of marquee signing Bruno Guimaraes, following a £75m deal with Newcastle. Gyokeres praised the midfielder, stating that his quality and energy will be a significant boost to the squad.
Despite the optimism, Gyokeres admitted the team must sharpen their defensive focus following their recent pre-season performance against Borussia Dortmund. With their Premier League opener against his former club, Coventry City, on the horizon, the striker is focused on balancing their attacking intent with tighter defensive discipline.
