Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey has been officially ruled out of his national team's opening match at the 2026 World Cup. The 32-year-old was denied entry into Canada by local authorities, citing strict immigration policies that prevent him from joining his teammates for their fixture against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto.
The decision by Canada's Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) follows a rigorous security assessment. Partey, currently playing for Villarreal, is facing seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault in London. Although the player has been released on bail and is permitted to travel internationally by UK authorities, Canadian legislation provides local agents with the autonomy to bar individuals if they are deemed a potential risk to local security.
In an official statement, the Canadian government noted that its border regulations are enforced "without exception, regardless of nationality, profile, or tournament role." Partey has maintained his innocence, and a final court ruling in Britain is not expected until early 2027.
Despite missing the opening match, Partey remains part of Ghana's plans for the remainder of the group stage. Since the subsequent fixtures will take place in the United States, the midfielder is cleared to participate. He will continue his physical training in the U.S. while waiting for the squad to return from Canada.
