South Africa saves draw against Czech Republic at 2026 World Cup
South Africa secured a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic thanks to a late penalty, keeping their qualification hopes alive.
South Africa and the Czech Republic played out a 1-1 draw in their second group stage match of the 2026 World Cup in Atlanta. The result keeps both teams in the race for progression to the next phase.
The Czech Republic took an early lead after Thomas Holes won the ball near the South African goal, setting up Alexandr Sojka, whose pass allowed Michal Sadílek to score with a right-footed finish. Despite the Czech dominance in the first half, the South African goalkeeper Williams, alongside defenders Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Ime Okon, prevented further damage.
In the second half, South Africa increased the pressure as the Czechs dropped back, leading to a shift in momentum. The turning point occurred in the 82nd minute when a shot hit the hand of substitute Pavel Šulc. Teboho Mokoena stepped up and calmly converted the resulting penalty to equalize.
This outcome benefits Mexico and South Korea, as the winner of their upcoming clash in Guadalajara will now confirm the top spot in Group A.
