Scarlett Camberos explains why she chose Mexico over the US
Ballon d'Or nominee Scarlett Camberos reveals that her decision to play for the Mexican national team was driven by her cultural roots and family pride.

Club América star and Mexico international Scarlett Camberos has opened up about her decision to represent the Mexican national team rather than the United States. Despite being born in the U.S. and holding American citizenship, Camberos explained that her choice was rooted in her heritage and a deep desire to make her family proud.
In an exclusive interview with The Women's Game, the attacker stated: "I never had a doubt that I would go for Mexico. I identify more with my Mexican side; my parents are Mexican immigrants. Culturally, too, I love Mexican food, I love speaking Spanish, and I love my friends in Mexico. It was an easy decision. I wanted to make my family proud; if I could choose, that was going to be my decision."
Beyond her impact on the national team, Camberos recently made history by being nominated for the prestigious Ballon d'Or. She humorously recounted the moment she found out while preparing for training. When she broke the news to her mother, who was visiting at the time, her mother asked what the award was. Camberos replied: "I don't have time to explain it right now... it's a very important award, the one Messi wins almost every year."
This nomination reaffirms Camberos' status as a top-tier international talent. Her journey, from navigating her national team choice to earning global recognition, highlights her influence as a representative of Mexican football on the world stage.
