Michel Platini supports Kylian Mbappe's right to take political stand
Michel Platini has defended Kylian Mbappe's right to voice political concerns while advising the Real Madrid star to maintain neutrality when representing the French national team.
French football legend Michel Platini has defended Kylian Mbappe's right to express his political views. The Real Madrid forward recently voiced deep concern regarding the potential electoral success of the far-right National Rally in France, which triggered significant backlash from political figures.
Platini argued that modern footballers are intelligent enough to engage with societal issues, rejecting the notion that players should remain silent. However, the former star offered a clear distinction regarding the player's professional responsibilities:
Kylian Mbappe is right to take a stand when he's not wearing the captain's armband or the French national team jersey. If he's in Madrid or elsewhere, he can take a political stance, of course. But with the French national team armband, with the French national team jersey, you're playing for all French people. So it's difficult to take a stand. Michel Platini
Platini further warned the superstar about the polarising nature of such comments, acknowledging that public political intervention often alienates large sections of the audience. He noted, however, that Mbappe appears prepared to stand by his convictions.
With the political debate ongoing, Mbappe must now pivot his focus back to the pitch. Didier Deschamps’ squad is currently preparing for their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign, with an opening fixture against Senegal scheduled for June 16 at MetLife Stadium.
