The World Cup match between Egypt and Iran at Lumen Field in Seattle was marked by multiple displays of LGBT pride in the stands. Supporters brought flags, banners, and other items related to the movement into the stadium, despite attempts by the federations of both national teams to prevent the exhibition of such symbols during the game.
The demonstrations took place after the Egyptian and Iranian federations requested that FIFA ban the entry of LGBT pride flags and any other symbols linked to the movement. FIFA, however, rejected the request, allowing fans to display the materials throughout the match.
The position of the two federations is rooted in the treatment of the LGBT+ population in their respective countries. In Iran, same-sex relationships are criminalized and can result in severe punishments, including the death penalty. In Egypt, while homosexuality is not explicitly criminalized by law, LGBT+ individuals are frequently targeted for arrests and prosecutions based on accusations of violating public morality.
