Granit Xhaka under investigation over Covid-19 certificate

Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka is the subject of an investigation by Swiss prosecutors regarding allegations that he obtained a forged Covid-19 vaccination certificate. The public prosecutor's office in Lucerne is currently working to determine if any criminal activity occurred in acquiring the document.

The issue dates back to 2022, when such certificates were required for certain travel and access to specific venues within Switzerland. Xhaka, who was playing for Arsenal at the time, acknowledged his actions in a statement released on social media.

"In this troubled state of mind I acquired a vaccine certificate, instead of clarifying my unanswered questions in the proper way. Today I see clearly, that this way was not correct. It was a mistake. I'm sorry. I take responsibility for this decision, will engage with the process of establishing the facts and fully co-operate with the relevant authorities." Granit Xhaka

Following the news, the Swiss Football Association confirmed that the midfielder, who holds the national record with 152 caps, has withdrawn from the squad ahead of upcoming Nations League fixtures against Scotland, North Macedonia, and Slovenia. The decision to withdraw was described as a joint one between the player and management. Discussions regarding his long-term future with the national team will take place after the current international window. Meanwhile, Sunderland manager Regis le Bris declined to comment on the matter, focusing instead on Xhaka's performance on the pitch.
