Tijuana midfielder Gilberto Mora has etched his name into the history books as the youngest player to ever score for the Mexico national team. At just 17 years, 11 months, and 13 days old, he found the back of the net in a match against Colombia that ended in a 1-1 draw.
The match marked the debut of Rafael Marquez as the new head coach of El Tri. In a significant show of faith, Mora was handed the iconic number 10 shirt for the first time. The player described the milestone as the realization of a lifelong dream.
"Very content, happy to be able to play another match and to score a goal. It was a dream I always had. I want to thank the fans and the people," said Gilberto Mora.
The goal came shortly before his substitution. Mora displayed composure in the box, cutting inside to create a better angle before firing home. Prior to this, his only goal contribution for the senior side had been an assist during the 2025 CONCACAF Nations League semifinals against Honduras.
Mora has now earned 19 call-ups to the national squad, appearing in 13 matches, with nine of those as a starter. His performance under Marquez suggests he is being groomed as a focal point for the team following their disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign.
