American soccer has a new rising star. At just 16 years and 363 days old, Philadelphia Union midfielder Cavan Sullivan became the fourth-youngest player ever to represent the US national team, earning a start in a 4-1 friendly victory against Peru.
His call-up follows a standout campaign in MLS. Since the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, Sullivan has produced statistics rivaling the league's top stars, recording seven goals and five assists this season. His performance in August and September was particularly notable, as he scored in six consecutive matches, significantly helping his club's rise in the standings.
Beyond his on-field success, Sullivan’s future is subject to significant interest. Back in 2024, English club Manchester City secured his future signing rights. His international debut occurred just a day after his future club was found in breach of numerous financial regulations in the Premier League, keeping the media spotlight fixed on his transfer situation.
Journalist Jonathan Tannenwald notes that Sullivan has managed the immense pressure well, aided by a supportive soccer family. His parents are former players, and he currently plays alongside his 22-year-old brother, Quinn, at the club level.
