Alex Padilla hits back at critics after Mexico national team call-up

Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Alex Padilla has responded to critics following his call-up to the Mexican national team by manager Rafael Márquez. Despite being born in Zarautz, Spain, Padilla has Mexican heritage through his mother and has faced scrutiny over his accent and perceived lack of connection to the country.

In an interview with TUDN, the 23-year-old acknowledged that his Spanish accent, shaped by his upbringing in the Basque Country, is the source of much of the criticism. However, he remains firm in his dedication.

Padilla pointed to a tattoo on his left forearm of an eagle devouring a snake, the emblem of the Mexican flag, which he received at age 16. He described the tattoo as a representation of his family, noting that the vast majority of his relatives are Mexican and that his mother instilled a deep sense of pride in him from a young age.

Regarding his club situation, Padilla remains content with his role as the backup goalkeeper behind Unai Simón at Athletic Bilbao. He reflected on his time on loan at Pumas in Liga MX, where he gained valuable starting experience, and stated that he is now focused on learning and professional growth within the Basque squad.
