Filipe Luis rejects Bayer Leverkusen to take Monaco job
Former Chelsea star Filipe Luis has reportedly agreed to manage AS Monaco until 2028, snubbing interest from Bayer Leverkusen and other clubs.
In an unexpected twist in the managerial market, Filipe Luis is set to take charge at Monaco. Following his successful transition into coaching, the Brazilian tactician is heading to the Stade Louis II to lead the club into a new era.
According to reports, Luis will replace Sebastien Pocognoli, who is departing after an eight-month tenure. The move comes as a blow to Bayer Leverkusen, who had identified the former left-back as a primary candidate for their bench, hoping to leverage his elite playing pedigree.
Chelsea and Benfica were also linked with the 40-year-old, but the project presented by Monaco's sporting director, Thiago Scuro, proved too tempting to turn down. The relationship between the two Brazilians was reportedly a deciding factor in securing the agreement.
By signing a contract through June 2028, the club has demonstrated a clear commitment to a long-term vision under Luis. His appointment follows a rapid rise in his home country, where he managed Flamengo from 2024 to 2026, securing both a league title and the Copa Libertadores in 2025.
