Concacaf unveils new Gold Cup 2027 format with guest nation

Concacaf has officially announced a major shift in the structure of the Gold Cup, starting with the 2027 edition. The primary change involves the group stage, which will move from four groups of four to two large groups of eight teams each. This adjustment is designed to drive more competitive matchups between the region's top-ranked nations from the opening days of the tournament.

The competition will feature 16 teams in total. Alongside regional participants, Saudi Arabia has been confirmed as a guest nation. Eight spots will be determined through the Concacaf Nations League, while the remaining seven places will be contested via the Gold Cup Prelims.

Each team will play four matches during the opening round. To determine matchups, participants will be distributed across four ranking pots, ensuring each team faces one opponent from each pot. The top four finishers from each group will advance to the Quarter-Finals, where the tournament proceeds to a standard knockout phase.

The tournament is scheduled to run from June 17 to July 11, 2027. Group play will conclude on June 30, with Quarter-Finals slated for July 3-4, Semi-Finals on July 7-8, and the Final on July 11. The format increases the total match count to 39, adding eight more games compared to the previous structure.
