Claudio Giráldez: "We would understand if the La Liga matchday were suspended"
Celta Vigo head coach Claudio Giráldez supports the potential suspension of La Liga fixtures following the death of Jesús de Miguel.
Celta Vigo head coach Claudio Giráldez has addressed the possibility of the upcoming La Liga matchday being suspended. The Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) has requested that the league halt fixtures following the tragic death of Tenerife player Jesús de Miguel.
"Football is secondary in these types of situations, and we would understand if the matchday were suspended. It is hard news, a high impact for all of us. If it is not suspended, we are professionals and we have to play, just as we are going to do tomorrow," Giráldez stated during his press conference.
In addition to his comments on the potential suspension, the coach expressed frustration regarding the criticism his team has faced this season. Despite sitting tenth in the league and competing in the Europa League, Giráldez believes there has been an excessive amount of negativity surrounding the squad from fans and the media.
"Since matchday three, there has been too much negativity regarding the team. This generation of players deserves confidence. I believe a lot in the squad and what we are doing. We are stronger when we are all heading in the same direction," the manager added.
Looking ahead to their upcoming European fixture against Union Saint-Gilloise, Giráldez praised the quality of the Belgian side, describing them as an emerging, aggressive, and highly vertical team.
