Burnley striker Lyle Foster has been named in South Africa's squad for the 2026 World Cup. This appearance marks the nation's return to the tournament finals for the first time since they hosted the competition in 2010.
Head coach Hugo Broos, 74, has selected a 26-man roster. Foster stands out as the only player based in Britain, while 19 squad members currently play in the South African league. The group includes uncapped defenders Olwethu Makhanya and Bradley Cross.
Broos acknowledged the difficulty of the selection process:
I know those players who had to drop out will be very disappointed. There were some very difficult decisions to be made. I hope I have chosen the right ones. Hugo Broos
This World Cup will be the final tournament for Broos, who confirmed he will retire after the finals. South Africa is set to face co-hosts Mexico in the tournament opener on 11 June in Mexico City, followed by group stage matches against the Czech Republic and South Korea.
