Chelsea suffered a devastating 3-0 defeat against an unbeaten Brentford side at the Gtech Community Stadium. Despite a bright start led by Pedro Neto and Cole Palmer, the visitors collapsed in the second half, exposing deep-seated defensive issues.
The deadlock was broken in the 61st minute when Jaidon Anthony converted a corner. It was the fifth set-piece goal conceded by Xabi Alonso's team this season, highlighting a recurring failure to organize effectively under pressure.
Brentford exploited the physical gaps in Chelsea's backline throughout the match. Thiago netted in the 82nd minute to double the lead, ending a seven-game goal drought. The misery for Chelsea was compounded in stoppage time when Fabio Carvalho, returning from a long-term knee injury, scored from a long throw-in to seal the 3-0 victory.
The result sees Chelsea drop to seventh in the standings with seven points from five games. Brentford, meanwhile, climb to third with an impressive undefeated start to their campaign.
Alonso now faces an urgent need to restructure his defensive setup during the upcoming international break. Chelsea are set to return to action against Bournemouth on October 10.
