Alonso addresses transfer rumors linking Chelsea to veteran stars

New Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has sidestepped questions regarding reports linking his club to experienced players like 35-year-old Danny Welbeck and 36-year-old Jordan Henderson. Speaking after a high-scoring 6-4 friendly victory against Western Sydney Wanderers, the manager stressed his focus remains on building a complete squad.
"I am certain that from today until the last day of the transfer window there will be many rumours, and I will not comment on them all," Alonso told Mundo Deportivo. He emphasized that the club requires the right balance in terms of player quality, positional needs, and overall team structure.
The 44-year-old outlined his vision for the weeks ahead as the team prepares for the start of the Premier League season. While Chelsea's attack looked sharp in the friendly, Alonso highlighted glaring defensive errors and the need for improved "match management."
"You can be quick, or good at dribbling, but you also need game intelligence to make the right decisions," Alonso noted. Regarding squad availability, the manager also confirmed that midfielder Roméo Lavia missed the match as a precaution due to minor hamstring discomfort.
