Xavi names first Netherlands squad: Memphis Depay omitted, maiden call-ups for van Bommel and Zechiel

The Xavi era for the Netherlands national team has begun with a ruthless edge. The former Barcelona manager has sensationally left out Memphis Depay, signaling a definitive break from the previous cycle under Ronald Koeman. Memphis, currently chasing the all-time scoring record for his country, finds himself surplus to requirements as the new staff prioritizes match fitness and current form over reputation.
The squad overhaul extends beyond Memphis, with veterans Marten de Roon and Wout Weghorst also missing out. On a positive note, defender Jurrien Timber makes his return to the international setup following a long-term knee injury. The roster is heavily focused on emerging talent, highlighted by maiden call-ups for Ruben van Bommel—son of former international Mark van Bommel—and Feyenoord midfielder Gjivai Zechiel, who has impressed with his goal-scoring form this season.
