Xavi Hernandez unveils first Netherlands squad with dual debutants

New Netherlands head coach Xavi Hernandez has officially unveiled his first 26-man selection for the upcoming UEFA Nations League campaign. The 46-year-old, who took charge in August alongside his technical staff, has handed maiden senior call-ups to Ruben van Bommel and Gjivai Zechiel.

The squad features: Nathan Ake, Ruben van Bommel, Brian Brobbey, Virgil van Dijk, Denzel Dumfries, Mark Flekken, Jeremie Frimpong, Cody Gakpo, Lutsharel Geertruida, Ryan Gravenberch, Jorrel Hato, Jan Paul van Hecke, Justin Kluivert, Teun Koopmeiners, Noa Lang, Donyell Malen, Tijjani Reijnders, Robin Roefs, Crysencio Summerville, Kenneth Taylor, Jurrien Timber, Quinten Timber, Joey Veerman, Micky van de Ven, Bart Verbruggen, and Gjivai Zechiel. The players are set to gather at the team headquarters in Zeist on Monday, September 21.

Xavi emphasized that a 26-man roster provides the necessary flexibility for a demanding international window, which includes four fixtures in just two weeks. The former Barcelona boss is keen to evaluate his entire group in a competitive setting during his opening weeks.

Ruben van Bommel, a winger for PSV known for his explosive pace, brings a strong footballing pedigree as the son of Mark van Bommel and grandson of Bert van Marwijk. Feyenoord midfielder Gjivai Zechiel also earns his promotion to the senior side following impressive performances for the Netherlands Under-21 team.

The Dutch begin their Nations League campaign on September 24 against Germany at the Johan Cruyff Arena. Following the opener, the team will face Serbia in Belgrade on September 27, travel to Greece on October 1, and conclude the intense four-match stretch back home against Serbia on October 4.
