Why Arne Slot is not yet head coach of the Netherlands

Sources indicate that the Dutch football association has prepared a contract for Slot that runs until mid-2030. However, the coach, currently without a club, would prefer a deal that concludes after the 2028 European Championship.

Slot has been the primary candidate for the role since Ronald Koeman stepped down following a disappointing World Cup campaign. Despite the mutual interest, a definitive agreement remains elusive. The timeline is becoming increasingly tight for the KNVB, as the Netherlands are scheduled to face Germany in the Nations League on September 24, with the Germans having already appointed Jürgen Klopp as their manager last week.

Interestingly, Liverpool appears willing to facilitate the move. Reports from De Telegraaf suggest the English club still owes Slot over ten million euros and is prepared to top up his salary to help bridge the gap if he accepts the national team job. This willingness stems from the professional way Slot handled his departure from Anfield.
