Toluca vs Monterrey: Head-to-head history before Leagues Cup final

Toluca and Monterrey are set to face off in the 2026 Leagues Cup final, both aiming to become the first Mexican club to lift the trophy in this format. While the two sides are well-acquainted through domestic play, this will be their first international encounter in a knockout stage.
Historically, the Diablos have held a clear upper hand in elimination ties. In the era of short tournaments in Mexico, they have met five times in the playoffs, with Toluca emerging victorious in four of those series. Their most memorable clash remains the 2005 Apertura final, where Toluca secured the title with a 6-3 aggregate victory.
Monterrey's only playoff success against the Diablos came in the 2009 Apertura semifinals, winning 3-1 on aggregate. More recently, in 2025, Toluca advanced past Monterrey in two separate playoff series by virtue of their better position in the general league table after aggregate draws.
