'They surprise even me!' – Luis de la Fuente hails Spain's resilience

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente admitted that his players continue to exceed his expectations after they recovered from an early deficit to defeat Croatia 2-1 in Split. Despite falling behind to an Ivan Perisic header, Spain dominated the second half to keep their 43-match unbeaten run intact.

De la Fuente praised his team's ability to maintain composure within the intimidating atmosphere at Stadion Poljud.

They are fantastic footballers and they never stop fighting. They surprise even me sometimes — I will be the first to admit that. Luis de la Fuente

The manager explained that patience was the crucial factor in breaking down a disciplined Croatian defensive unit. While the hosts remained dangerous on the counter-attack, Spain's control in the second half ultimately paid off, resulting in a win that the coach described as having "enormous merit."

A special mention was reserved for substitute Mikel Merino, whose two goals proved decisive. De la Fuente labeled the midfielder as one of the best in his position globally, highlighting his innate ability to deliver in the most significant moments of a match.

The victory confirms Spain's place in the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League quarter-finals with games to spare. De la Fuente remains confident in the group's ability to uphold their high standards as they look ahead to the international window in December.
