Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has been granted a short holiday to recover after being substituted in the 67th minute of Norway's Nations League match against Portugal. The striker requested the early exit due to muscle fatigue, though any concerns regarding a serious injury have been dismissed.
Norway manager Stale Solbakken confirmed the substitution was a pre-planned move to manage the forward's heavy workload. Solbakken highlighted the extreme physical toll the current football calendar places on top-level players, many of whom have had minimal recovery time between seasons.
Erling was simply thoroughly spent. Some of my players have only had six or seven days of holiday. It is an extreme strain. Stale Solbakken
Haaland is expected to return to training on Thursday to finalise preparations for Sunday's vital trip to Liverpool. The match marks the club's first outing since an independent commission found the reigning champions guilty of 114 financial breaches. While the club has lodged an appeal, the atmosphere remains intense as staff face mounting external pressure.
Beyond the legal fallout, City are managing minor fitness concerns, with Nico O'Reilly and Antoine Semenyo also working through recovery. Liverpool are similarly dealing with selection issues, as both teams look to field their best squads for the upcoming encounter at Anfield.
