Ruben Valenzuela: The physical coach behind América's intensity
Veteran physical trainer Ruben Valenzuela is a key figure in Guillermo Almada's staff, credited with the high-intensity performance of Club América.
The high-intensity playstyle of Club América under Guillermo Almada has become a signature of the team. Behind this aggressive, non-stop pressing performance lies the meticulous work of Ruben Valenzuela, a trusted member of the manager's technical staff.
The partnership between Valenzuela and Almada began years ago at Barcelona SC in Ecuador. Following their successful tenure there, they moved to Santos Laguna, and eventually, Almada selected Valenzuela as a key pillar for his new challenge at Club América.
During the team's preseason in Spain, Valenzuela's demanding methods were on full display. Players like Ramon Juarez acknowledged that the training sessions were exceptionally rigorous, featuring double and sometimes triple sessions to build the necessary stamina. This preparation is now paying off, with América currently leading in Liga MX and performing strongly in the Leagues Cup.
Valenzuela boasts over 45 years of experience in professional football, with 37 of those spent in Mexico. Throughout his career, he has worked with over 20 professional clubs, including Atlas, León, and Cruz Azul, earning multiple domestic titles and Concachampions trophies.
At 65, Valenzuela remains dedicated to constant learning and mentorship. His philosophy emphasizes that behind the physical intensity, there is a deep respect for the player as an individual, a mindset he has cultivated over four decades in the sport.
