The announcement of the Netherlands' 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup has sparked significant debate, with the omission of Jeremie Frimpong being the most notable surprise. Head coach Ronald Koeman justified his choice by citing the player's physical fitness issues and the team's tactical requirements for the tournament.
Frimpong, currently with Liverpool, has struggled with recurring hamstring problems this season, managing only 35 appearances across all competitions. Consequently, the coaching staff opted for West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville to fill that role.
It is true that Frimpong has been injured quite often this season; in the match against Ecuador, he had to leave the pitch very quickly. It is a physical issue, but I also chose another player for the right flank — Summerville. I like reliable players on the pitch. Ronald Koeman
The squad is already dealing with major absences, including Xavi Simons and Jerdy Schouten, who will miss the tournament due to ACL injuries. Koeman resisted calls to include younger prospects, emphasizing the need for defensive stability. Meanwhile, Jurrien Timber's availability remains uncertain ahead of the Champions League final against PSG, with Ian Maatsen and Lutsharel Geertruida kept on standby.
Koeman also addressed the form of Memphis Depay, admitting he regrets his starting lineup decisions during Euro 2024 and intends to manage the forward's playing time more carefully this time around.
