In a dramatic round-of-32 clash at the World Cup, the Paraguay national team pulled off a major upset by defeating Germany in a penalty shootout (1-1, 3-4 on penalties). The hero of the night was goalkeeper Orlando Gill, who delivered a standout performance to keep his team alive.
Gill saved two penalties, denying both Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade. Standing at 1.99m, the goalkeeper was emotional after the final whistle, describing the match against the powerful German side as a "horror movie" where the opposition attacked from all angles.
There are so many emotions, I don't know how to express it. I'm happy with the qualification and for helping the team in the penalty shootout. We held on for 120 minutes, and thank God, luck was on our side. Orlando Gill
Gill's journey to this moment was far from smooth. Following a difficult opening game against the United States, where he conceded four goals, the goalkeeper faced sharp criticism from Paraguayan legend José Luis Chilavert, who questioned his character and lack of communication with his defensive line.
The situation was compounded by manager Nestor Alfaro's hesitation in selecting his primary keeper, often rotating between the young Gill and 38-year-old Roberto Fernandez. Chilavert had publicly lamented this indecision, arguing that such uncertainty only creates emotional instability for the squad.
Despite the skepticism, Gill proved his worth when it mattered most. The San Lorenzo player, who has only recently become a regular in the national team setup, embraced the pressure. "A goalkeeper's life is like this, opportunities come sooner or later. I had to fight hard, but I never gave up, and today I am reaping the rewards of all my sacrifices," he stated.
