Lisbon giants Benfica have reached a principal agreement with Marco Silva to become their new head coach. The Portuguese tactician, who recently departed Fulham after a five-year tenure, has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract with an option for an additional season.
An official statement is expected next week, as the club awaits the outcome of the presidential elections at Real Madrid. There is strong speculation that current Benfica boss José Mourinho is the primary candidate to return to the Santiago Bernabéu if Florentino Pérez is re-elected.
Benfica has officially notified the Portuguese financial regulator regarding the situation. Because Mourinho is under contract until 2027, the Spanish giants would be required to pay a 15 million euro release clause to secure his services.
Under Mourinho, Benfica had an unbeaten domestic season but finished third, missing out on the Champions League. Silva returns to his homeland with experience from managing Everton, Watford, and Hull City, alongside a successful stint at Fulham, where he achieved a club-record points tally in the Premier League.
