Manchester United receive mixed injury updates on Martinez and De Ligt

Manchester United have received mixed updates regarding the fitness of their central defenders as they prepare for the 2026/27 season. The club remains optimistic that Lisandro Martinez will be available for their Premier League curtain-raiser against Hull City. The Argentine defender, who sparked concerns after clutching his thigh during the World Cup final, has undergone medical evaluation, with staff concluding the issue is not serious.

Martinez is expected to rejoin Michael Carrick's squad following a post-tournament break. His availability is considered a significant boost for a side returning to Champions League action. Despite some fan scrutiny regarding his injury record, the former Ajax man is set to play a pivotal role as United aim to build on last season's third-place finish.

Conversely, the situation with Matthijs de Ligt is more complex. The Netherlands international has been sidelined since last November and missed the World Cup following a corrective procedure for a persistent back problem. His recovery is ongoing, and he is not expected to return to the fold until at least the autumn.

Amid these defensive concerns, United have been active in the market, securing Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48m and poaching Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.
