Saint-Etienne has officially introduced 39-year-old Scot Ian Cathro as their new head coach. The club secured the manager from Estoril for a fee of €500,000, with his contract running until June 2028. Cathro succeeds Philippe Montanier, who left the club.
Huss Fahmy, vice-president of Kilmer Sports Ventures, acknowledged the club's recent struggles. "We did not reach our objective, it was a failure. We take responsibility and accept the disappointment," Fahmy stated. The board believes that Cathro's extensive international experience in Spain, Portugal, England, and Saudi Arabia will allow him to adapt quickly and meet the objective of returning to Ligue 1.
We have a long way to go. Without fear, step by step. Ian Cathro
Cathro's coaching staff will include former French international Eliaquim Mangala, who has recently retired, along with his colleagues from Estoril, Englishman David Le Moël and American Bryant Lazaro. Cathro explained that his philosophy involves understanding the environment and building a team that competes in every moment.
Regarding his appointment, Cathro emphasized his awareness of Saint-Etienne's historic status and his ambition to build on that legacy. While acknowledging he does not have deep experience in Ligue 2, he promised that no one will work harder than him to meet the challenges ahead.
