A consortium including U.S. billionaire Jeff Bezos has acquired a minority stake in Liverpool, with terms in the agreement with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) that grant the group an option to purchase a controlling interest in the club over the next 12 months.
Sources close to the deal clarify that this mechanism does not constitute a firm commitment to buy, but rather provides an option for future investment. FSG will remain the majority shareholder and retains full operational control of the club, with no changes expected to the day-to-day leadership on Merseyside.
The consortium, 1892 Holdings, is headed by former Queens Park Rangers director Amit Bhatia, who will join the Liverpool board as vice chairman. Other key figures, including Elaine Saverin and Bryan Baum from K5 Sports, will also join the board, though Jeff Bezos himself will not hold a seat.
We are incredibly proud to be investing in Liverpool Football Club and to be doing so alongside FSG. We have the utmost respect and admiration for FSG as owners and for everything they have achieved at Anfield. Amit Bhatia
FSG stated that the strategic investment is intended to support the club's long-term growth ambitions by leveraging expertise in global business and technology. The current ownership group maintains that their operational authority remains unchanged following this transaction.
