Saint-Etienne has made a strong start to the new Ligue 2 campaign, securing two victories in their opening two matches, most recently a 3-1 win against Clermont. Despite the positive beginning, head coach Ian Cathro remains cautious, noting that the team started well last season only to miss out on promotion in the playoffs.
A standout performer in the early stages has been Irvin Cardona. Previously confined to a role along the touchline, the forward has been deployed in a more central position under Cathro’s new system. The tactical shift has paid immediate dividends, with Cardona contributing significantly after his opening-day brace against Sochaux.
I am playing a bit more centrally, with more offensive freedom. But this season the team also has good midfielders who give us great balls. That helps quite a lot. Irvin Cardona
Cardona opened the scoring in the 41st minute against Clermont, later providing an assist for Thierno Ballo and playing a part in the third goal scored by Jakob Breum. Beyond his attacking output, the player has also shown a commitment to defensive duties and pressing, earning praise from the coaching staff.
Irvin, like many other players, has adapted well to our system and our project. I am happy because I see him improving, especially in our pressing phases. Ian Cathro
Teammate Julien Le Cardinal praised the change, noting that the hybrid forward role suits Cardona’s skill set perfectly. Saint-Etienne will be hoping that this momentum continues as they aim for a successful season in Ligue 2.
